First, I’d like to wish all you beautiful people a happy, joyous new year – and thank you for visiting my blog in 2017! I’m aware that I suck at not uploading regular content…and have posted this on the 31st January (forgive me, please!?) So in light of this I have dedicated my featured image in relation to the Chinese Lunar Year, the year of the Fire Rooster.
Before I discuss my thoughts on this shiny new year, I’d like to sum up my thoughts on 2016, which is a year that…well…
As I type these words a montage of unsavoury memories, shock celebrity deaths and political chaos pummel through my mind. For me, it was a year that started off in uncertainty. I had very little money to my name, I felt extremely lonely and lost in my personal life, and as a result I ended up moving back home (which was a huge reality check for me, as I’d left home at 18 to go to university and hadn’t moved back, until now).
I am fortunate to say now that 2016 ended in a much happier state. I’m still living at home, but I get to spend more time with my family, and my beautiful dog niece! I’m back on the savings ladder and fortunate to have found full-time work in the city. Travelling was a quiet affair in 2016; I only visited Dublin and Budapest which was a far cry to my travel itinerary the previous year! However I focused more time traveling around the UK and coincided a lot of weekend breaks with music gigs and festivals I yearned to see when I was away. Even though a part of me felt upset that I didn’t travel abroad as much, I’m still grateful to explore parts of my country that I probably wouldn’t have considered several years ago.
Earning again has also given me the opportunity to splurge on some ideas. For instance, I love coffee (probably as much as tea) so I completed a basic barista course to better understand what it takes to make a perfect cup of coffee. I now know how to use (and proudly own!) a V60, Aeropress and coffee grinder, and will continue to perfect my brewing technique. I also really enjoy photography, so I’ve invested in my first DSLR camera. I’m excited to start experimenting with my new kit and develop my own unique style.
Thoughts for 2017
Although my blog is ‘Travel.Sleep.Repeat’ I am not currently living this kind of lifestyle…for now. I am however working full-time and I’m slowly crawling my way back up on savings. So for that reason, 2017 is the year where I will continue to (drumroll please..) Work-Save-Repeat. Didn’t see that one coming, did ya!
I have no goals or definitive travel plans set just yet. However I am relishing new opportunities and will continue to work on my self development between my busy lifestyle. I remain dedicated to travel, and not a day goes by where I don’t think about Asia (especially Japan) or new adventures to places I’ve yet to explore. All I can say now at this moment in time is that I’m happy, healthy, loved, and grateful for the opportunities I have.
Also, watch this space! Because you never know what the universe has planned…
